Description
The Shaper Origin is a handheld CNC machine that can handle many different tasks in the shop. You can make everything from tight-fitting joints and inlay to jigs and fixtures. Each student must bring their own Shaper Origin with them to class.
Shaper Origin Basics
The class begins with an overview of the tool and how to set it up for optimal use. If you haven’t done so already, we’ll get you signed up for your Shaper account and show you how to download files from ShaperHub. The class moves on to basic layout and placement of various shapes. Once you’ve mastered layout and placement, we’ll continue with some basic joinery and inlay.
Some of the skills covered in this class are:
- Layout and placement of objects
- Calibration
- Basic joinery
- Simple inlay
Each student should supply his, or her, own:
-
Shaper Origin
- Safety glasses and hearing protection
- Combination or machinist square
- Bevel gauge
- Bench chisels
- Carver’s mallet or dovetail hammer
- Dovetail saw
- Marking gauge
- Smooth plane or jack plane

If you do not have the tools on the list, don’t panic; there are plenty of tools for your use in class. The only exception is you must bring your Shaper Origin
