Description
The Newport tea table is one of the most sculptural 18th Century pieces. In this week-long class, you’ll make your own version of one of the most elegant tea tables in existence.
Newport Tea Table
The original table, upon which our copy is based, was made in 1765 for Nicholas Brown of Newport, RI. A masterpiece in its own right, this table class begins with a full-sized drawing. The joinery, sculptural aprons, and top follow. Rounding out the week is carving ball and claw feet with pierced talons.
Some of the skills learned in the Newport Tea Table class are:
- Carving matching ball-and-claw feet
- Sculpting linen-fold aprons
- Carving a solid, dished top
- Decorative knee carving
Each student should supply his or her own:
- Safety glasses and hearing protection
- Combination or machinist square
- Bevel gauge
- Bench chisels
- Carvers mallet
- Carving tools
- Dovetail saw
- Marking gauge
- Smooth plane or jack plane
- Block plane
- Tape measure or folding rule
If you do not have the tools on the list, don’t panic, there are plenty of tools for you to use in class.
