Description
Probably the single most renowned furniture maker of the 20th century is Sam Maloof. And his hornback chair (sometimes called his Texas chair) is one of his most iconic pieces. In the Make a Maloof Inspired Hornback Chair class you’ll build your interpretation of this sculptural beauty.
Maloof Hornback Chair
The five-day class begins with full-scale shop drawings. You’ll then move on to creating the structure of the chair with its sculpted joinery. Making and fitting the spindles and crest is surely a challenge for woodworkers of all levels. The final stage is contouring the seat and making all the lines flow – all with an eye to creating one of the most comfortable wooden chairs you’ve ever sat upon.
Some of the skills learned in the Maloof Hornback Chair class are:
- How to make sculpted joints
- Making curved and rounded spindles
- Shaping a seat for comfort and appearance
Materials are not included in the class fee. Lumber for this project may be purchased through us or on your own and shipped to our shop at least four weeks prior to the class.
Each student should supply his, or her, own:

- Combination or machinist square
- Bevel gauge
- Bench chisels
- Carvers mallet

This is my 2nd class with Chuck. I love how he keeps his classes small. You learn so much more when you aren’t craning your neck to see over someone or standing behind people waiting to use machines. Chuck is a master who not only knows what he is talking about but is able to convey this to you in a way that keeps you engaged and smiling (quite the sense of humor!). I can’t leave out his superb lunches! Each day was better than the prior. Two thumbs up. Highly recommend taking ANY class of his. You will not be disappointed.
