The Wharton Esherick stool class allows you to perfect your sculpted mortise and tenons.
Wharton Esherick Stool
Wharton Esherick is one of the most influential woodworkers of the last century. In this class you’ll recreate Esherick’s 1929 stool with sculpted mortise-and-tenon joinery. Or get creative and adapt the design to your own taste.
Some of the skills learned in the Wharton Esherick stool class are:
- Sculpted mortise-and-tenon joinery
- Shaping round and tapered parts by hand and machine
- Project planning and layout
- Matching figure in wood to provide the best possible look for your project
Materials are not included in the class fee. Lumber for this project may be purchased through us or on your own and shipped to our shop at least four weeks prior to the class.
Each student should supply his, or her, own:
- Safety glasses and hearing protection
- Combination or machinist square
- Bevel gauge; bench chisels
- Carvers mallet
- Dovetail saw
- Marking gauge
- Smooth plane or jack plane
- Block plane
- Tape measure or folding rule
- Spokeshaves and draw knife
If you do not have the tools on the list, don’t panic, there are plenty of tools for your use in class.
Course Dates:
- July 15 – 19, 2019
The shop opens at 8:30 am. Class begins at 9:00 am. A delicious lunch, snacks and soft drinks are provided. Class ends at 4:30 pm – the shop remains open until 5:30 pm.
The class is limited to a maximum of 3 students.

Just a great course. If you are looking to learn not only about building this classic Esherick stool but also about information in design, joinery, and craftsmanship, this is where you want to be. You will find Chuck’s expertise in classic period furniture design and construction to be a daily part of free-ranging class discussions. This is all in a modern, safe workshop located within a forested landscape with ever present deer in the background. And the lunches are amazing as well as the good natured banter that goes with it. This was my first experience with sculpted joinery. I needed a stool for my kitchen so this build fit the billet. I had enough wood, so I built two stools, and each is unique with all joints shaped by hand tools to get that natural “organic “ feel. When looking for a tool to hog more wood and to shape out my legs, Chuck offered his drawknife, and I found this to be an excellent tool for the task. What always makes the classes at Acanthus great in addition to learning from each other is the fun and comradery that develops from working together in the well stocked, climate controlled shop. After working alone alone in my home shop it is always a delight to get into another shop with humans for the fun interaction. Good food served to boot!
