Description
The cabriole leg is a graceful and essential form in most Queen Anne-style furniture and we are fortunate to have Chuck Bender, an expert in this furniture style, hosting this unique two-day hands-on class.
Chuck is a nationally known craftsman and a recipient of the prestigious “Cartouche Award” presented by SAPFM. Chuck, who also runs his own furniture-making school and custom furniture business in Jim Thorpe, PA will begin by teaching students the basics of design and layout for a graceful cabriole leg that could be used in a Queen Anne style “tea table”.
Students will go on to layout their own leg, bandsaw it to shape, and spend time refining the shape with rasps, spokeshaves, and scrapers. The class will also feature demonstrations of the layout and carving of a shell on the knee, carving a Trifod foot leg as well as turning the more common padfoot on the lathe.
The cabriole leg gets its name from the French term for goat’s leg– but don’t worry– you can apply the shape or variations on it to period or contemporary work! Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the leaders in the field. Some specific tools will be required and will be listed on the school website.
