SUMMARY:Build an Eli Terry Pillar and Scroll Wall Clock
DESCRIPTION:  \nEli Terry\, Native of East Windsor\, Ct who apprenticed under Windsor clockmaker Daniel Burnap\, pioneered using interchangeable wooden parts to produce the first ever affordable clocks in the early US. His “Pillar & Scroll” clocks went a step farther and featured standardized decorative pillars\, a scrolled top\, painted dial and a reverse painted (églomisé) glass decorative scene. Join Chuck Bender as we build a replica of these iconic shelf clocks. Everyone’s basic clock will be the same but the decorative elements- bandings\, inlay\, scroll work\, etc- is only limited by your imagination! As an added treat we will visit the Yale Furniture study in West Haven\, CT to check out their collection of originals. Due to the variety of options in accessing the works \, the clock dial and the reverse painted glass panel\, the materials fee will not include these items. We will assist everyone in procuring the necessary hardware but there is such a range of options and expense that these decisions are better left to each participant. Class will meet over two 3- day weekend for a total of six days of class time. The case will be made in mahogany unless you want to utilize a different species (please contact Bob Van Dyke bob@schoolofwoodworking.com. \nThis is a great opportunity to make an exceptional family heirloom. Chuck Bender is the recipient  of the prestigious Sapfm Cartouche award for 2022. Sign up today. Class is limited to eight participants. \n

SUMMARY:A Unique Tour of the Yale Furniture Study with Patricia Kane: William & Mary Furniture
DESCRIPTION:Many of you have expressed the desire to accompany CVSW director Bob Van Dyke on one of his frequent visits to the Yale University Art Gallery’s Hume American Furniture Study Center in West Haven\, CT. The Furniture Study is an 18K sq. ft facility that houses over 1300 pieces of furniture\, clocks\, and wooden objects. Particularly strong in colonial and Federal furniture\, mainly from the Mabel Brady Garvan Collection\, the Furniture Study also contains tool displays that unpack craft processes\, as well as a collection of about 200 pieces of contemporary turned-wood and related sculpture. \nBuilding on the overwhelming success of our first two “up close” seminars with Patricia Kane\, Friends of American Arts Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Art Gallery\, this time we will be examining the Furniture Study’s extensive collection of William & Mary Period furniture. These pieces are the precursor to the later Queen Anne & Chippendale styles and are really the bridge between the earlier 17th century “joined chests” and early 18th century furniture which began relying on dovetail joinery. In this new seminar Pat will be joined by Chuck Bender\, 2022 SAPFM Cartouche Award recipient. Chuck has made countless William & Mary pieces and will offer many insights into the how & why of the construction techniques. As always\, Pat’s extensive knowledge of the sociological background of the period coupled with her extensive knowledge & interest in construction details- and how they relate to later furniture styles\, ensures that we will have a unique and fascinating look into this important furniture style. \nSign up today. We are limiting this tour to 8 participants. \nAs an added bonus\, after Pat’s presentation\, Furniture Study Manager Eric Litke and CVSW Director Bob Van Dyke will lead an informal tour of American furniture on view in the Yale Art Gallery downtown.  After lunch (on your own) we will meet in the Gallery lobby at 1:30 and check out more of Yale’s excellent collection. \nHope you can make it. \nTuition: $ 90.00 (over half of the proceeds will be donated to the Yale Art Gallery’s American Decorative Arts Department) \nFriday\, April 4\, 9:30am – 12:00pm \n9:15: Meet at the Yale Furniture Study entrance\, 900 West Campus Drive\, West Haven\, CT

SUMMARY:Build a Cantilevered Chair
DESCRIPTION:Build a Cantilevered Chair\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday October 28 2023\n\n\nTwo weekends\, 09:30 AM – 05:00 PM \n\n\n\n\nManchester \n\n\n\n\n\nSession information\n$745.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n  \nGeorge Nakashima was one of the most influential studio woodworkers of the twentieth century. In this class\, we take inspiration from several cantilevered chair designs to make a chair of our own that makes a visual statement. \nChairs can be some of the trickiest projects to build because of the angular joinery. While the construction of this chair is fairly straightforward\, there is plenty to test the skills of woodworkers of any skill level. Whether you’re still perfecting woodworking skills or you’re a seasoned veteran\, this project is a great gateway into chairmaking. Unlike Queen Anne and Chippendale chairs\, where compound-angle joinery abounds\, cantilevered chairs are single-angle and easily created using modern power equipment. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t any handwork for those hand-tool enthusiasts. The seats and spindles are shaped and finished by hand. \nThe first two days (October 28 & 29) of this class are spent working on the design of the chair\, understanding chair mechanics\, and creating the structural joints. The second two-day session (November 18 & 19) focuses on saddling the seat and attaching the spindles and crest rails. \nThe spindles for the back will be turned by a local woodturner but you will have the opportunity to learn how this is done. The class is broken up into two weekends so you will have plenty of time between sessions for any handwork and practicing that you will want to do. This class is 4 full days. \nYou can make your chair in walnut or cherry. \nPlease select appropriate material fee when checking out \nSign up today—space is limited! \nTuition: $745.00 plus materials (Walnut $368.00\, Cherry $273.00)

SUMMARY:Carve a Cabriole Leg with Chuck Bender at CVSW
DESCRIPTION:Saturday October 14 2023\n\n\n2 days\, Sat 9:30 AM – Sun 5:00 PM\, 09:30 AM – 05:00 PM \n\n\n\n\nManchester \n\n\n\n\n\n$385.00\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription\n  \nThe cabriole leg is a graceful and essential form in most Queen Anne-style furniture and we are fortunate to have Chuck Bender\, an expert in this furniture style\, hosting this unique two-day hands-on class. \nChuck is a nationally known craftsman and a recipient of the prestigious “Cartouche Award” presented by SAPFM. Chuck\, who also runs his own furniture-making school and custom furniture business in Jim Thorpe\, PA will begin by teaching students the basics of design and layout for a graceful cabriole leg that could be used in a Queen Anne style “tea table”. \nStudents will go on to layout their own leg\, bandsaw it to shape\, and spend time refining the shape with rasps\, spokeshaves\, and scrapers. The class will also feature demonstrations of the layout and carving of a shell on the knee\, carving a Trifod foot leg as well as turning the more common padfoot on the lathe. \nThe cabriole leg gets its name from the French term for goat’s leg– but don’t worry– you can apply the shape or variations on it to period or contemporary work! Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the leaders in the field. Some specific tools will be required and will be listed on the school website. \nSign up today space is limited. \nTuition: $385.00 plus materials ($51.00)
