Things to do –

The Pocono Mountains are filled with a variety of activities to suit just about any traveler’s needs.

Dining

There’s plenty of options for dining; from home cooking to fine dining. Some of my favorites are:

  • Dom ‘N Ali’s – On Rt. 903 North about 2.4 miles north of the shop on the left. Excellent steaks and seafood as well as Italian entrees, sandwiches, and pizza.
  • Trattoria 903 – On Rt. 903 North about 2 miles south of the shop (heading back toward Maury Rd.) on the left. Generous portion Italian entrees and brick oven pizza. A little more upscale, but still comfortable.
  • Molly Maguires – In the old section of Jim Thorpe at 5 Hazard Square (across from the Carbon County Court House). Excellent Irish Pub with tasty food and drinks. It’s only about 5 miles from the shop and a little closer to the Country Inn & Suites.
  • Union Publick House – At 212 Centre Street in Jim Thorpe, you’ll find the only self-proclaimed, “Dive Bar” in town. Thursday night is, “Burger Night” with the tastiest $5 cheeseburger and fries (or California Burger and fries – add cheese for $.50 more) you’ll ever eat. The rest of the food is pretty good too, but don’t expect fine dining. This place would be right up Guy Fieri’s ally.
  • Boulder View Tavern – On the lake at the base of Big Boulder Mountain at 123 Lake Harmony Rd, in Lake Harmony, PA (about 10 miles north of the shop just off Rt. 903 North). This place has good food with nightly dinner specials and an extremely reasonable Sunday brunch (only $12 per person).
  • Robert Christian’s – About a 25-minute drive north of the shop, at 710 Route 940 in Pocono Lake, PA, but it’s worth the trip for excellent steaks and seafood (Thursday night is Prime Rib night).

Activities

Upper Falls, Lehigh Gorge State Park, PA
  • Hiking  – there are numerous trails to hike in the Jim Thorpe area; many can be found at www.traillink.com. Along the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway (which leaves from Jim Thorpe) is a gravel walking/hiking/biking trail called the Switchback Railroad Trail that runs along the railroad tracks beside the Lehigh River. And west of the town of Jim Thorpe is Lehigh Gorge Overlook Trail and the Glen Onoko Falls Trail, take a camera and serious hiking gear – the Falls trail can be treacherous for the inexperienced hiker.
  • Biking – Many of the trails in the Jim Thorpe area also accommodate bicycles. You can bring your own or, if you need a bike, try Pocono Biking in Jim Thorpe (across from the train station, behind Molly Maguires)
  • Pocono Whitewater – About 2.2 miles north of the shop you can set out on your whitewater rafting adventure down the Lehigh River.
  • There’s plenty of shops and stores along Broadway in Jim Thorpe. There’s everything from the Mauch Chunk 5&10 to Trappe Alley Used books to a store that sells custom-designed footwear, jewelry, and accessories  – Artisanal Gifts.
