Tools

• In order to have the best experience possible in the class, I suggest you bring along as many of the basic woodworking hand tools as you can. This way you will be working with the same tools in my shop that you use in your shop. They include (but are not limited to): bench chisels; mallet/hammer or other striking device; square; measuring tape or rule; dovetail saw; block plane; smooth plane; sliding bevel; marking gauge(s); marking knife and/or pencil; and safety glasses and hearing protection. The more tools you have, the more problems you can solve. But don’t freak out if you don’t have everything on the list – I have plenty of tools for you to use in the shop. And certainly DO NOT run out and buy tons of tools you don’t already own (unless you are planning on doing it anyway and you need an excuse to justify the purchases for the spouse, in which case the “NOT” is a typo).

Materials

Please do not do any final milling of your materials; rough cut boards to length only as noted. All flattening and dimensioning will be done in class.

• If you are supplying your own materials you’ll need:
  • 2 pcs. – 3″ X 6+” X 8′ of primary for legs, knee blocks, and finials (minimum width is 6″, closer to 7″ or 8″ is better but don’t go crazy with super wide 12/4 ).
  • 1 pc. – 2″ X 12″ X 8′ of primary for goosenecks, crown returns, and mid-molding.
  • 2 pcs. – 1″ X 18+” X 8′ of primary wood for upper and lower case sides, and scroll board (can be two boards glued up to make 18+” wide).
  • 3 pcs. –  2″ X 10″ X 8′ of primary wood for rails and drawer blades.
  • 4pcs. – 1″ X 8″ X 8′ of primary for drawer fronts (figured and matching is very nice, and when in doubt bring an extra board or two).
  • 2 pcs. – 1″ X 18″ X 8′ of secondary wood for upper case top, bottom and lower case back (doesn’t have to be one piece 18″ wide).
  • 3pcs. – 1″ X 10″ X 8′ of secondary wood for the enclosed bonnet, drawer runners and guides. (when in doubt bring extra).
  • You’ll need tons of secondary wood for drawer sides, bottoms and backboards, but do not bring this to class. We will not be dovetailing drawers in class, and we will create a materials list for this by the end of the first week.
• The final things you’ll need are your preferred hardware. For the drawers, I suggest 14 drawer pulls similar to the C1-004 or C24-071 knobs found here (any of the plate pulls will do, try to stay around a 3″ boring). You’ll need 5 matching escutcheons to your pulls, and 2 stirrup drops, similar to the G15-131 or G21-154 for the fan drawers found here. You’ll also need locks for the drawers if you plan to use them (I suggest not using locks for several reasons), and if you do, I recommend the TCB-014  or the TFB-029 or TFI-030 found here. Of course, you are welcome to use any hardware you want; the above listed are merely suggestions.
